Who Misses the L Word?

by cme4it

After first watching the L Word, I immediately recognized what a jewel Showtime had on their hands. Finally, a show where not only are they dealing with real women's lives, but also truly enveloping the dynamic aspects of their characters' struggles. I was quickly sucked into the storylines, the triumphs, the pain, and the mistakes made by each of these very sensitive and complicated women. I became a true fan, determined to support the show by tuning in each week and even purchasing the DVDs. So...I did.

But what I am left with after four seasons is a bad taste in my mouth. I feel let down by the show for probably alot of the same reasons other faithful viewers do. The show has become uneventful, unsurprising, and the development of most of the characters doesn't really explore the vast and infinite interesting possibilities of characters like Tina and Shane whose lives used to be fascinating to me. How did Tina become somewhat of a backdrop to Bette, not just in the old sense where she basically played wifey to Bette's Alpha Female impersonation. Let's not even get into the fact of Shane basically never even speaking of Carmen. I mean, what is that? The show used to mirror real time. These characters actually embodied the way that "us out here" journey through life.

AND WHERE'S DANA? Okay fine, people die of breast cancer. I'm not being insensitive by stating that fact so frankly. BUT...this is a television show whose livelihood depends on viewership. And Dana and Alice's relationship was like more than one third of what made the show so great. And I'm not so sure eliminating her is a good idea even though I think we all get it...the L word wants to represent certain political, social, and health concerns pertinent to women all over the world. Thus comes the war and the intervention at Shay's school and Jenny's book as the L Word's self-serving homage to itself AND let's not forget about Dana dying of breast cancer. I'm no expert but the best way to deal with the overarching issue in art is to layer it in the story because most tragedy speaks for itself and takes on a life of its own. It needs no blatant melodramatic afterschool special specificity and focus. It needs only its own presence. How marvelous it might have been if Dana survived what killed my friend's mother and countless others if only to inspire hope especially because Ms. Daniels played that storyline to the hilt and with little of the shimmer and pomp you see on Lifetime's Original Movies.

But Bette...Oh Bette, where art thou? Is it just me or is Bette disappearing? What I love about Bette is that her story in and of itself is fairly boring and universal. Beals really delves deeply in Season 1 to reveal the complex nature of a love relationship and watching her in that first season was educational for anyone who had doubts about the possibility of love. I say that because for all of us who have been jilted by men and or women, we realize that people are fragile, vulnerable, and culpable regardless of their sex. For someone who works so hard to imagine and create her life without limits, Bette has become exhausted with herself. And it translates across the screen as a kind of boredom that is deadly in your lead protagonist. It makes the show dreary at times, especially because Beals is an incredibly powerful actress who reads loudly even in her slightest facial expression. She doesn't NEED to get back with Tina. She definitely doesn't need to be in a relationship with Jodi. Honestly, that relationship is pretty dead. Just like Shane and Paige and Papi and everyone and Phyllis and anyone, which seems like a joke. The only truly compelling and believable relationship was Alice's relationship with Sista Souljah. I actually believed that they liked each other.

What works? Pam Grier, thank goodness, is such a throwback to how great the show used to be. Alice, oh Alice. If it weren't for her, I think the show would be pretty difficult to watch every week. Jenny continued to provide the comedic relief. I love that they are problematizing her writing through Sciorra's character. Helena's character remains true, but pretty boring and this relationship with the gambling woman is BOGUS. Papi, as is, just doesn't work period. She could work, but I don't believe that she would be friends with the whole crew and the whole womanizing thing is getting very redundant. And the only thing that saved the Kit-Papi exchange is Pam Grier. Subsequently, Grier brought out the best in the Papi actress. That's the only time I really actually felt that Papi was connected to something human and real. No matter how trivially you treat your life, you are a human and your dilly dally usually comes from real pain. We don't get that from Papi. Here's a suggestion, albeit however funny, pair Bette with Papi and let's see the humanizing revolution unfold.

Okay, I hope that next season's L Word comes back to its old senses. I hope that Bette's out of body experience is explained and I hope that Tina actually has a storyline. I hope that Dana becomes a permanent ghost character on the show (just (half) kidding). I hope that they don't wear their politics on their sleeve via T-shirts and overstated political agendas and classroom interventions. Trust me, any and everyone who watches the show probably gets it. Tolerance is good. Hatred is bad. I hope that Phyllis' character becomes a little more necessary. I hope they give Papi some dimensions. I hope that there are actual story arcs...And I hope I L(ove) it.

Comments: I think that the show has been great in all of it's seasons, meaning that it changes, people in real life move on. It's a creative process. I argue that I get tired of the same old, and new characters/plots are exciting. We live in a very moving world and I think personally whatever they do, I'd still be clapping. Look we've come this far...!

Comments: I really love this show and the reality it has created. I love the characters, both new and old, like family members that I will always cherish, but don't necessarily want to spend a great deal of quality time with. These past four seasons have been bittersweet. You are correct cme, in that there were so many unexplored and missed opportunities for character development. Going all the way back to Season 1/2....whatever happened to Candace? Did she and Bette ever get full closure? What black hole did Mark fall into? Is he still alive? What drove the variation in character between Dana's new ghost and the good old Goofy Dana of yester-season? Where's Carmen? Where's Carmen? Where's Carmen? What happened with Marina? Did she and Jenny ever really talk or did their interaction end with that funky musical scene? I could go on and on....but therein lies the beauty of this universe. The fact that I want to know more. The fact that I can't wait until season 5 to see what strange twists of L-universe await. It makes me realize that even though I find the character development storylines flawed, I still love this crazy little L-world enough to keep hungrily coming back for more.

Comments: I agree, but the show isn't fabulous, it's alright. It used to be fabulous, but aside from Angela's writing the episodes became mundane, boring, predictable, very unexciting. Everyone has their favourite characters, a Danish, or Tibette, Sharmen, whatever, but it's those favourites that keep us coming back to watch. Each year IC has made some loaded comment about going back to the roots of the show, back to S1 and that format....yet nothing actually materializes. And I don't hold up much hope for S5 either. But I'll probably watch, as will most everyone else...we keep hoping to see more, to be brought to the edge of our seats waiting for "next week" and what happens. I'm almost glad that JB has only signed on for the 5years and I don't think she'll be wanting more than that, as well the others have probably had enough and will look for more opportunities...IC will go back to her regular studio job and be this one hit wonder. We will all be able to get on with our lives, all the better for knowing this show and what we have been exposed to. IC and her co originators must be thanked for that. The S4 ratings showed the true thought of those watching...it was just ok, and in hollywood, just ok won't last for very long.

Comments: Totally agree with you 100% cme4it! I thought the season was only average. I too felt that the characters were not really fleshed out. I couldn't help but think that in a better writer's hands, the characters of Tasha and Papi would've been more compelling and Phyllis' storyline would have been more powerful. I found Paige boring and the Shane storyline failed to keep my interest after Shay went back to his father. I did like the Max and Jenny storylines this year. And I did enjoy seeing the character of Tina fleshed out more. As in season 2, I believe IC waited too long in the season (episode 10 or 12?) to show us that Tina was still into Bette. But I guess it will be interesting to see next season what will a waffling Tina do with her feelings and to see if Bette can stop being clueless and see that T is still into her. Jody doesn't really do it for me but I do enjoy watching MM sign. Also, none of the sex scenes really popped for me this year. Ditto the music. Next year, I'd like to see some amazing new characters like in earlier seasons when we saw Joyce Wishnia and Helena Peabody and Carmen and Franklin and Melvin Porter and Sherri Jaffe. Also would it kill them to give Kit a good lover? I think you and I are in the minority but I agree with your post!

Comments: I agree w/ the comments about Season 1 being so much better than all the other seasons. It's like a different show to me. I still liked season 2 mainly b/c my beloved Marina was replaced w/ Carmen(well in my mind lol) and I loved the Alice/Dana pairing. Actually I even liked Bette being a mess. But Season 3...I feel like they just killed off the best parts of the show when they killed Dana. It was really a very bad decision for so many reasons. I thought Season 4 was better but just floundering. It didn't go anywhere. I agree w/ a lot of the character analysis. But I do have my own personal favs of course and mostly I would say that I disagree about Bette. Maybe it's just b.c I never focused on her much b/c Jenny and Shane used to be my fav characters(yes I am a reformed Jenny lover, it was all over for me when she killed the dog). And I never thought I would say it but Shane has become so blah for me. So this season all I could really see was Bette, JB's acting just soars above the rest for me.And I like Phyllis and guess I am the only one. I also like Tasha and am sad she is leaving but by now I've learned not to get to attached to the characters! Oh and Alice is amazing of course but it was painful to see her w/ Dana and realize how much the show is missing their chemistry.I think it was funny you didn't even mention Max at all, lol. Oh well, I think my biggest problem w/ the show now is basically what you were getting at, the characters for the most part are now "characatures"(I think I am spelling that wrong but hopefully you know what I mean.) There's no layers or depth(except for Bette to me but that might have more to do w. JB's acting like you were saying). Anyway great editorial. Now we have a whole other yr to speculate about Season 5!

Comments: Having just finished watching season 3, I am interested to read your comments. It seems things are going to get worse before they get better! The beauty of the first two seasons was the optimism in the character lines and the dealing with issues which confront(ed) us all in the days if village life.I'm disappointed that the fabulous character we met in S1 and S2 have disappeared into soap opera complications. Why?? The ideas were so fresh and it would have been great to see the human dramas resolve themselves in more authentic ways. Mind you, my early years probably read more bizarrely than some of these story lines and that's just tragic.I was charmed to meet the magnificent but human Bette, the down to earth Tina, the inevitable Shane and the hilarious sides of Alice and Dana.can we move back to what we really know and love about L women and bring these characters back to life in S5?I have such respect for the writers and actors - where were they when I was in my 20s, 30s, 40, and more.R>I love it and don't want it to disappear in a whirlpool of stereo types and unnecessary complication.Oldybutgoody
